What is the Southwestern Difference?
16 May 2010
While there are a number of door to door sales-companies, there are none that compare to Southwestern Company. The difference between this particular company and other companies that you will find selling door to door is the number of years they have been around and the quality of their salespeople. The Southwestern Company has it’s roots back in 1855 and was so named because back then Nashville, Tennessee , where the company is now centered and then founded, was the Southwestern part of the United States.
When the South succeeded from the North for the civil war, the North cut them off from their supplies of Bibles. The founder of the company sneaked printing plates across the border and started to print his own bibles in the South. He would travel to wherever the soldiers were located and offer to sell them Bibles. For the South, this felt like a great victory. When the nation was brought back together, J. R. Graves took what he had learned and moved on to publishing and recruiting others to sell for him.
There are a number of other stories, just as incredible about the people who have worked at Southwestern company. As the years have gone on, so have the booksellers, and these days there are sometimes generations of booksellers. Their father did it, and his father before that. It goes back some time, and the reason is clear. These kids are asked to go out, overcome any shyness that may be hanging around, become strong, endure rejection and long days out in the sun. They also overcome great obstacles and refuse to give up, changing their lives for the better and making them ready to do anything.
Southwestern has expanded across nations, and with good reason. It has helped many students and for each person effected, is a family that has also been affected. That is the Southwestern Difference.
