When to Upgrade from a Standard Point & Shoot Camera
Whether you have a photography degree or just enjoy capturing photographs on the go, having the perfect companion camera is essential. With digital technology progressing at an incredible rate, newer and better cameras appear at stores seemingly on every visit. If you currently used a point and shoot camera, you might want to consider upgrading to something a bit more professional. Point and shoot cameras are nice, but offer limited controls and features, when compared to the larger digital SLR options.
Does the zoom quality of your current point and shoot camera set you off? These cameras generally have a lacking in zoom, as the built in lens generally is incredibly small. This helps give a seamless design to the camera, not to mention lend to its small stature, but it results in poor zoom quality. For many point and shoot cameras, the optical zoom often maxes out at three times (basically meaning you can zoom into the image by 300 percent). The cameras do possess something known as a digital zoom, but this simply degrades the quality of the image. Digital zoom essentially enlarges the pixels of the current image, making the content appear closer up than what is actually the case. Using a digital zoom forces the image to appear pixilated, (which disrupts the natural flow of the image). With an upgrade, digital SLR cameras possess the ability to interchange different lenses, with many providing you with incredible zoom features as the lenses are longer, so there is more room for the glass lens to move closer to, and away from, the shutter.

Whether you have a photography degree or not, you’ll find a digital SLR upgrade provides excellent depth of field, far greater than point and shoot camera. Depth of field is the amount of area in the image that is in focus. A long depth of field has the entire picture in focus, while a short depth of field has only the key subject matter i focus. If you’ve ever looked at a picture with only a certain area in focus and always desired this affect, it is time to upgrade from the point and shoot camera you own. An SLR gives more creative control over to you, the user, and although the small effect features on a point and shoot are nice, photography is all about what you capture, not how the camera edits it.

Backpacking across Europe is one of the most rewarding experiences a recent college graduate can give themselves or receive as a graduation gift. Before entering the workforce, settling down, planting roots, there is no better time to explore another part of the world. Traveling is something that is life altering. It cannot help but be that. It is impossible to have a different experience without gaining new knowledge.
